Compare

WhyChose, compared honestly.

If you're evaluating WhyChose against another tool, here's the head-to-head — including the cases where the other tool wins. Credibility comes from saying when not to pick us.

The short version

WhyChose extracts engineering decisions from your ChatGPT and Claude exports. It's narrow on purpose. The three tools below are the ones senior engineers most often have already and are deciding whether to add WhyChose alongside.

vs adr-tools

The status-quo for active ADR writers. adr-tools is the Nygard-style CLI for writing Architecture Decision Records by hand. It's small, free, and proven — but it only captures decisions you remember to write up. WhyChose works on the back-catalog: the decisions you made in ChatGPT or Claude and never circled back to document. Best together.

vs Notion

The wiki where decisions are read — but rarely captured. Most engineering orgs have a Notion decisions database. Most of those databases are 80% empty by month four. The schema isn't the problem; the capture habit is. WhyChose isn't a Notion replacement — it's the upstream that fills the database from your AI chats. Pro tier exports directly into Notion via the API.

vs Mem

AI-aware notes, but still a notes app. Mem is excellent at general-purpose AI-aware notes — daily journals, backlinks, AI Q&A across what you wrote. The catch is that you have to write things in. WhyChose works on what's already in your ChatGPT and Claude conversation history — which is where most of an engineer's real thinking lives now. Different problems, different tools; not really substitutes.
